When Galveston Gazette society reporter Jazz Cross hears rumors of grave robbers at the Broadway Cemetery, she and photographer Nathan Blaine stake out the area, hoping to land a scoop. After Jazz stumbles over a dead body, she asks her beau, Prohibition Agent James Burton, to help investigate: Was it a mob hit—or a sinister spirit? Meanwhile, the supernatural craze takes Galveston by storm, and Jazz is assigned to profile the society set’s favorite fortune teller, Madame Farushka. Sightings of a ghost bride haunting the Hotel Galvez intrigue Jazz, who sets up a séance with the mystic. Did the bride-to-be drown herself—or was she killed? Luckily, Sammy Cook, her black-sheep half-brother, has escaped the Downtown Gang and now acts as the maître d’ for the posh Hollywood Dinner Club, owned by Beach Gang leaders. His new job is threatened when a mystery man turns up dead on his turf, and Sammy is framed for murder. As rival gangs battle for control, Jazz relies on her moxie and wits to save her brother and friends before the Downtown Gang exacts its revenge. What a great read! Collier's smart and classy writing style keeps the familiar cadence of a "whodunit" novel or film noir. With all the moxie of Lois Lane, Jazz Cross is the kind of strong female character you find yourself rooting for. Full of rich historical detail and colorful 1920s slang true to the era, Galveston--the "Ellis Island of the West"--jumps off the pages. A fun and entertaining mystery drives the plot along, but it was the story world that really won me over. Every aspect--from the cultural climate to the perfume and cosmetic cases--is fully realized and I couldn't have asked for better world-building. It was a special treat to learn so much about Prohibition-era Galveston while having the pleasure of enjoying the story. Hardcore history and mystery lovers alike will fall head over heels for this series, and general readers will be enlightened and entertained.
