Appointed by President Jefferson Davis, this West Pointer from Indiana served under 11 Confederate commanding generals, as artillerist, engineer, and chief of staff. General Francis Asbury Shoup served ably and brilliantly at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and the Atlanta campaign for Hood's Franklin and Nashville invasions. Stockades and artillery forts at Atlanta were named Shoupades, some of which are still standing. General Shoup advocated strongly for Negro troops. His life after the war is what you would expect from a sensitive and caring individual. Shoup became an Episcopal minister, teaching at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. James W. Raab was born and educated in Reading, Pennsylvania. He served during World War II and graduated from Albright College with a B.S. in economics. A sales representative for Prentice Hall publishing company for 22 years, Raab also worked as a circus booking agent for 20 years. Raab and his wife, Doris, of St. Augustine, Florida, are the parents of Anne and Thomas. Raab has authored W. W. Loring Florida s Forgotten General ; J.
