Die before you die is a Sufi teaching about life. It’s about how to live a life that is ripe and full, free of the oppressive false self. It’s a spiritual practice of awakening the aspect of your being that can never die because it has no separation. In this short book we will examine different sides of this idea: “Die before you die.” What does it mean? How do we live in this state where we have died before we physically die? We will discover that we are talking about a state of freedom. There is this part of us, our habits, our habitually asleep nature, that is afraid of letting go of ego control. But no matter how much we grasp we don’t have control anyway! We need to let go of the thing that feels like it's grasping onto us. Die before you die--the thing that needs to die is not alive, it's not real. You are alive. Always keep that as your center of groundedness. You are alive, you are the one living your life. You're the one who gets the bad news, you're the one who gets the good news. You're the one who can relax into reality and let it flow you through to wherever it's going to go. We can always choose the uncertainty of awakeness, or the seeming safety of our illusions.
