Grade 3-5?Another story based on the author's life with Baby, the dolphin he saved in Dolphin Adventure (Greenwillow, 1990). This time it's the man's life that's on the line as a storm leaves him stranded off the coast of Florida during a dive for sunken treasure. Baby is now full grown, and Grover's relationship with him is extraordinary but not unprecedented (remember Flipper?). One thing after another goes wrong, until Grover realizes how much he has risked for gold and jewels. A terrifying night at sea follows; panic, hypothermia, exhaustion, and finally sharks threaten to put an end to his life. In a dramatic, emotional climax, Baby and his family arrive on the tails of hungry sharks and rescue their human friend. While the timing might stretch credibility, this tale is one that will thrill youngsters who enjoy reading about treasure hunts as much as those who love animal stories. The author's concern and respect for both dolphins and men who have made the sea their lives is apparent in both his narrative and in Fowler's soft black-and-white illustrations. A must for those who met Baby in the first book, and a treat for anyone looking for a fast and fascinating read.?Susan Oliver, Hillsborough County Science Library at MOSI, Tampa, FL Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. Gr. 3^-5. Drawing on his experiences with deep-sea diving, marine life, and historic shipwrecks, Grover spins a compelling first-person fictional adventure at sea. Wayne and two other veteran divers ignore the threatening wintry weather and the ominous absence of the dolphin family that customarily accompanies their attempts to recover treasure from a sunken Spanish galleon they have at long last discovered. Letting his excitement over their find of jewels override his good sense, Wayne finds himself separated from his boat in a storm-tossed sea amid hungry sharks. The realistic details intensify the drama as Baby, the dolphin whose rescue is chronicled in Grover's nonfiction account Dolphin Adventure (1990), comes to his rescue.
