Despite what friends, lovers, and enemies believe, there is not one thing supernatural about the family of surfers from Newport Beach, California. Or is there? He said, "I'm standing there, looking at the water, just about to go out for my first ride, when Amanda comes in out of the surf, carrying that heavy black and yellow longboard that she used to use. "I said hi, and Amanda tilted her head, looked at me sideways. "'You sure have grown since I seen you last,' she said. 'What's your name, again?' "I told her my name. Then, like she was too polite to look for herself, she said, 'You still got the duck feet?' I told her that I did, and then, as if she'd now been given permission, she looked down at my feet. She smiled and said, 'Mmm. Now ain't that something'? You know what they say about white boys with duck feet, don'tcha?' "'That it helps us surf?' I said lamely. "'You really dont know?' she said. 'Your Mama never told you? Nor your Daddy?' I shook my head. 'And you ain't found out for yourself yet?' "I shook my head again. I had not a clue what she was talking about. "Amanda grinned at me then and said, 'Ain't I the lucky one, then? You know somewhere private we can go?'" Please send questions and comments, praise and outrage to lmfoster@9thstreetpress.com.
