Duke University: The First One Hundred Years presents a visual and narrative history of Duke University from its naming in 1924 to the celebration of its Centennial in 2024. The book includes engaging and memorable photos, stories, quotes, and excerpts from historic speeches and letters that highlight the pivotal moments and people—both known and under-recognized—who have contributed to Duke’s remarkable trajectory from a small liberal arts college to a global research university. The book aims to illustrate the local, national, and global impact that Duke students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, alumni, and friends have had over the past century, spanning education, research, healthcare, athletics, arts, innovation, and service. Carolyn Gerber graduated from Duke University in 1990 with a double major in English and comparative literature and also did graduate studies in the Ph.D. program in English at Duke. She has worked at Duke for more than 17 years, including in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the President’s Office, and is currently the special assistant to the vice president for communications, marketing, and public affairs.
