Men in Kansas are dying horrific deaths. They suddenly develop tremors, their limbs contort, and their fingers curl like claws. Thrust into this mystery are Abby O’Conner, an out-of-work journalist, and her old nemesis, Oakley Hawthorn, a retired FBI agent. Abby and Oakley travel across Kansas uncovering clues that suggest someone is imitating a bizarre rejuvenation surgery performed by the infamous Dr. J.R. Brinkley in the 1930s. (Dr. Brinkley was a very real person. He made millions in the 1930s transplanting animal testicles into impotent men who complained of having a “flat tire" - crazy but true!) They are joined by a group of quirky characters: Wanda-June, a country-western singer who has a stiletto tongue, a big heart and goes through husbands like most people do shoes. Edna and Edith Sparrow, who are spunky twins in their 70s. (Edith has the marksmanship skills of a sniper which comes in handy.) They also run a ranch where they herd cattle with old VW convertible beetles while wearing WW1 aviator helmets and goggles. Always present and frequently coming to the rescue are Max and Rufus, two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, who play an important role throughout. Before long, whomever is responsible for these deaths is determined to stop Abby and Oakley's investigation and will go to any lengths to eliminate them. He has a very creative way of making his enemies disappear - permanently. Dying Breed is a fast-paced mystery with snappy dialog, and humorous characters. It is first of many more exploits of Abby, Oakley and their friends. It will be enjoyed by fans of Janet Evanovich and Janet DeLeon.
