This is a story of Don Rust's time in the Navy during WWII, from induction to discharge. His primary battle experience was serving with the Marines, as a corpsman on Iwo Jima. The story is a compilation of notes and audio tapes he left his family. He was a great storyteller, and, like many soldiers, he had mixed emotions about his time in the military service during the war. On the one hand, he was proud that he served his country; on the other hand, he was haunted by the memories of the battle.
