For as long as I can remember, I've felt a strong connection to the creatures we share our planet with. I believe animals have their own intelligence, courage, and ways of communicating, and I've wondered what the world might look like if humans listened more closely. As I conjured stories over the years about endangered animals, my love for animals became the heart of Extinction Warrior. My imagination led me to create Luki Sloan, a brave twelve-year-old girl who can communicate with animals, feels things deeply, and refuses to stand by when her parents go missing while endangered creatures are in danger. I wanted young readers to see that courage doesn't mean being fearless. Courage means caring enough to act. I also wrote this story because our planet faces serious problems that we've created - extinction, climate change, habitat loss and trafficking, but I didn't want to overwhelm kids with scary facts. I wanted to offer hope through adventure, friendship, humor, futuristic technology, and heart-pounding action. Luki's gift of animal communication is a symbol of empathy - the idea that understanding and kindness can change the world. Mig, her mischievous Arctic fox, represents how powerful our animal companions can be. Tuk, Luki's android partner gave me the chance to explore the world of A.I. - a world we barely know, and are just beginning to grapple with. Through Tuk, young readers can experience artificial intelligence not as something distant or intimidating, but as a tool that can help, question, learn, and grow. My hope is that his character gives kids a chance to understand A.I. in a thoughtful, curious, and accessible way. Whether you're a young reader exploring this story on your own, or a parent or teacher sharing it with others, my hope is the same: that Luki inspires you to care deeply, act bravely, and believe that one person - especially a young person can make a real difference. Thank you for joining Luki, Mig, and Tuk on this journey! — Susan B. Wile Twelve-year-old Luki Sloan is a gifted animal communicator growing up on the Bering Strait in desolate Wales, Alaska.
