One of modern photography's greatest pioneers, Edward Weston awakened his viewers to the sensuous qualities of organic forms. In this biography Ben Maddow draws heavily on Weston's uncut journals and letters and on the reminiscences and written accounts of his closest friends and family to reveal the man behind the opaque formalism of the photographs. W. R. Burnett is a novelist and screenplay writer who lives in West Hollywood, California. Among his many novels are The Great Escape and The Roar of the Crowd. Edward Weston began to earn an international reputation for his portrait work in 1911. From 1923 to 1926 he worked in Mexico and California, where he lived with his sons, turning increasingly to subjects such as nudes, clouds, and close-ups of rocks, trees, vegetables, and shells. On a Guggenheim Fellowship from 1937 to 1939, he photographed throughout the American West.
