Edwin Kent Edwin Kent was born on March 3, 1849, in Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of a carriage maker. His mother was Anna Kiel, who owned a small farm. He was a talented singer and skilled in amateur theater. He married in his thirties and worked as a salesman, where he was fired for being “too old”. He had six children by this time. Edwin’s wife was Hanna Broadhead Hills (Kent), born in Sheffield England in 1851. Her family had money (it’s unclear, possibly from the Hills Brothers Coffee? Around the 1980s Harold received some inheritance money as a descendant, the last payment.) Hannah was a accomplished watercolor artist. She also ran a bakeshop in Brighton in the 1880s. In 1889, after Edwin lost his job, Hannah’s family paid for her, Edwin and their six children to sail to the USA where they immediately took a train to California. They bought apple growing acreage in Healdsburg, California, 50 miles north of San Francisco in Sonoma County. Edwin died in March 1929. Hanna stayed in the US and passed in 1935. Edwin was grandfather to Harold E. Kent and great grandfather to Rodney Kent. Given from memory by Joyce Kent, daughter-in-law to Harold Kent.
