The Tigris (for which this jewelry gets its name) is the eastern of the two great rivers that define Mesopotamia, the other being the Euphrates. We created these earrings to resemble jewelry from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The earrings have a drop length of 1.5 inches and a lever-back closure. We use high-quality 18K gold plated brass for the accent beads. We use high-quality, genuine black onyx and carnelian stones. Your earrings will be shipped with an information card. Visit our store to find our matching beaded necklace. Ancient Egypt, one of the richest and most advanced of the early civilizations, appeared on the stage of history around 3100 B.C. (Dynasty I). Hieroglyphic scripts and tomb decorations document the Egyptians' belief in the after-life, their mythology, and deities. Jewelry was often worn as protective talismans. Gold was believed to reflect the life-giving rays of the sun. The color and brilliance of gemstones traditionally determined their value and religious significance.
