The City provided everything for its citizens: food, clothing, housing, jobs...everything except for freedom In a gray and not too distant future, everyone on Earth was ordered to live in one of seven vast cities. In the cities, people’s lives have been carefully managed and controlled. The urbanization of all humanity was intended to save the planet by freeing Nature from the despoliation of mankind. Urbanization was also supposed to free mankind from having to struggle against Nature in order to survive. Through technology and rigorous management, Urban Citizens would be provided with their every need without harming Nature. Human nature, however, required especially strict management to maintain peace and order. Relations between men and women created conflicts and loyalties to someone other than The City, so contact between the sexes was outlawed. Procreation became yet another function of government. Later generations, thus freed from such archaic passions would, at last, find tranquility and personal meaning through productivity. The average Urban Citizen, having had their every need provided and managed for their entire lives, would be ill-equipped to survive outside of The City’s walls, where Nature had returned to the wild. This is the tale of a small group of citizens who found themselves exiled and stranded in The Outside. Will there be enough pre-urban humanity left in them to survive
