The theology of “the last things” has long been, and still is, a source of confusion and contention among Christians. Indeed, the century just past could be called the century of eschatology. In that century, theologians such as Albert Schweitzer, C. H. Dodd, Rudolf Bultmann, Oscar Cullmann, and Karl Barth loom large. On a popular level, the end of the second millennium was replete with predictions of the “end,” or the “rapture,” or the “great tribulation,” and such predictions have not ceased. This being so, the field of eschatology—the theology of the consummation of the cosmos—should be of interest to every Christian, not just those who are theologians. This collection of chapters brings eschatology into conversation with a wide variety of disciplines, including Scripture, patristic and medieval theology, philosophy, and history. The result is a scholarly volume that enriches both eschatology and the fields with which each contributor engages. Eschatology at the Beginning of the Third Millennium will help pastors and catechists in their ministries to understand more deeply the riches of a theology which is about much more than the “end times.” "Eschatology was commonly considered a niche subject, a theological add-on both limited in scope and of little relevance in the wider theological picture. This wide-ranging collection of essays edited by Kevin Wagner, Peter John McGregor, and Danijel Uremovic shows how untrue this approach has become in recent times. Eschatology is seen to be not only anthropologically challenging, Christologically centered, and theologically integrative, but also deeply present throughout the history of theology: in Scripture, liturgy, church fathers, the medieval period, and in modern and contemporary thought." --Paul O'Callaghan, Professor of Theological Anthropology, Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Rome Kevin Wagner is a lecturer in theology at the University of Notre Dame, Australia, specializing in patristics. He is co-author of Dreams, Virtue and Divine Knowledge in Early Christian Egypt (2019). Peter John McGregor is a lecturer in theology at the Catholic Institute of Sydney, and the author of Heart to Heart: The Spiritual Christology of Joseph Ratzinger (2016). Danijel Uremovic completed his masters thesis on the ecclesiology of Erich Przywara and Hans Urs von Balthasar at the University of Notre Dame, Australia. He has edited various works in theology and philosophy, including the forthcoming Ratzinger Dictionary.
