This book is practical business guidance for sign language interpreters looking to establish a freelance interpreting practice. Interpreter training programs often lack basic business-related coursework, and this book is designed to fill that gap. Tammera J. Richards is celebrating 30 years as a sign language interpreter. She graduated from the Portland Community College Sign Language Interpreter Training Program with an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Sign Language Interpretation in 1992. In October, 1993, Tammera received her National Association of the Deaf Level IV: Advanced certification, and in August of 1994 was awarded her Certificate of Interpretation (CI) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. In June, 1995, she attained her Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, and most recently was awarded her Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L) certification in January of 2004. In 2005, Tammera graduated from City University of Seattle with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration: General Management. Tammera is the former owner of the Portland, Oregon interpreter referral agency NorthWest American Sign Language Associates, Inc. from 1994-99.  It currently operates under the name Access Services Northwest.  Tammera served two terms as president of the Oregon Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (ORID), and provides mentoring and evaluation for student interpreters and colleagues across the country. Currently, Tammera resides in the Portland, Oregon metro area where she works as a freelance sign language interpreter primarily focusing on legal, conference/platform, post-secondary, and voice interpreting work, and enjoys spending time with her husband, Stefan, and her sons Nick and Jack.
