Mark Greenleaf Johnson attended a candlelight vigil in memory of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in November 1978. At the vigil, he wrote, “Everyone is by themselves when someone is killed.” Six weeks later, he was murdered on his 24th birthday while attempting to assist a gunshot victim outside his apartment. This short book is a compilation of stories connected with Mark’s death — including an editorial in the San Francisco Examiner, a sculpture by artist Jack Kearney, a tribute in the recently published book, “30 Under 30” honoring gunshot victims who died too young and the political activism of his niece who was born 20 years after Mark’s death.
