There are 36 maple pieces (24 cross against grain cut and 12 with the grain cut). This makes the CORE of the fingerboard. The top and bottom of each fingerboard are the other 24 pieces (various colored pieces shown in picture #1). Explanation: You will receive 2 straight/grain cut pieces of Fumed Aspen. To make the fingerboard, you will use 2 cross cut and 1 straight cut maple-which is in this package as the CORE and the 2 Fumed Aspen will be on the top and bottom of the fingerboard.
