“FACES of the THIRD IOWA CAVALRY” by David G. Hunter is a valuable companion piece to his full-length work entitled “BATTLES of the THIRD IOWA CAVALRY: 1861-1865 [A Civil War Chronicle],” the latter being a detailed narrative of the history and heroics of the regiment covering not only the larger battles such as Wilson's Creek, Pea Ridge, Vicksburg, Brice's Crossroads, Westport, Selma, and Columbus, but also lesser actions and skirmishes in which the Third Iowa Cavalry took part. From points as far west as Kansas and as far east as Georgia, the men and officers of the regiment were revered by their fellow Union soldiers and feared by their enemies. Whereas that work is a strictly textual analysis, “FACES of the THIRD IOWA CAVALRY” is a pictorial compilation of over 120 surviving photographs of some of those brave horse soldiers from that storied regiment, of which the author’s great-great-grandfather, Enoch Hunter, belonged. Not a biographical book, but rather a “roll call” of sorts in a modest effort to reunite and honor these valiant brothers in arms who fought with valor for the preservation of their country; those who, against all odds, returned home, as well as those whose final resting places are the shallow, lonely graves dotting the battlefields and along the lines of march.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
