The author 'Indigenizes' awakeing by privileging Indigenous world views and spiritual practices. In addition, the case is made that religious and spiritual colonization has been occurring on Turtle Island for hundreds of years, which has distorted the earth's consciousness; this consciousness is an integral part of awakening. In order to cultivate awakening on this land we must restore the original harmony as it was and is known by the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island. Harmonizing with Earth consciousness must be part of our practice if we are to achieve liberation. Meditation practice must have as its main objective the cultivation of compassion that is directed at suffering and end to suffering. In order to validate the importance of earth awareness in our liberation practice, the author tells us that awakened beings have lived and continue to live on Turtle Island. The book emphasizes the prophecy of Padmasambava; 'when the iron bird flies in the sky and the iron horse moves across the land the Buddha will be in the land of the Redface.' Throughout the book, trauma and how trauma may impede the process of concentration is woven into the fabric of the teachings. The author becomes transparent as he tells his personal story of ongoing healing from trauma and how an over activated sympathetic system will make concentration difficult to attain. In addition, BIPoC ongoing traumatic experiences caused by racism and other micro-aggressions are dealt with in a transparent manner. Dharma teachers who may not understand the ongoing traumas of BIPoC practitioners are advised to be mindful of how trauma impedes concentration and how these daily traumas impact BIPoC disproportionately in our society.
