No matter where one casts a fly in Canada, the fishing is rivaled by few places in the world. The country’s tens of thousands of miles of ocean coastline, hundreds of thousands of miles of streams and over one million lakes make knowing the whole of it an impossible dream for the single enthusiast. So 33 members of the Outdoor Writers of Canada pooled their 1,200 years of experience to produce this first comprehensive guide to fly fishing the whole of Canada. Collectively, they have authored over 30 books and over 15,000 articles in newspapers and sporting journals across North America. Now they share their knowledge and expertise about how, where and when to go fly fishing for over 70 species from the Arctic to the Pacific to the Atlantic. Jones is the fishing editor of BC Outdoors, associate editor of BC Sport Fishing and a frequent contributor to regional, national and international publications. He is a past president of the Outdoor Writers of Canada and a founding member of Fly Fishing Canada. From the preface to Fly Fishing Canada, the first comprehensive guide to fly fishing all of Canada This book is the result of sharing an idea that caught on. With interest in fly fishing increasing at a phenomenal rate over the past decade or so, a book about fly fishing across Canada seemed like a winner. However, considering our country s size, radical diversification of geography, the hundreds of thousands of lakes and rivers involved, plus the active recreational fishery of the coast of British Columbia, it seemed logical that such a project should involve as many writers as possible in order to do it justice. With that thought in mind, on July 6, 1998, I drafted a letter and sent it to 21 fellow members of the Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC). In it I proposed compiling such a book as a 100 percent volunteer project, with all profits shared equally between the OWC and Fly Fishing Canada. I felt that if a half-dozen members responded positively, the project might be worth pursuing. I received 19 replies---all of them offering variations of Let s go for it! . . . When we finally finished what was essentially a two-year project, 33 of Canada s best-known outdoor writers and photographers were involved, representing over 1,200 years of combined fishing experience.
