Formula One has always been a dangerous sport. But there was a time when pit crew, marshals and even spectators took a chance every time they went to the track in an era when safety was just an afterthought. It was the drivers, though, who took the greatest risk. Manufacturers, designers, and team owners encouraged them to push themselves and their cars to the limit and beyond in the quest for more speed.
