Fort St. Joseph was a mission, garrison, and trading post complex located in present-day southwest Michigan. The post was occupied for nearly 100 years during the 17th and 18th centuries by priests, military officers and soldiers, blacksmiths and interpreters, fur traders, and their families. Here, the lives of those residing at the post are illuminated through photographs documenting a selection of the more than 300,000 artifacts recovered from the site, including animal remains; domestic, military, and religious items; and evidence of homes occupied by the fort residents.
