The second Charles Racer novel takes him to Pine Valley, Colorado. A woman Racer met while on vacation pleads for him to come to Colorado and help find her mother who has disappeared. After persuading Racer, he finally agrees to make the trip and met with the family. The father, Malcolm Hollaway, explains to Racer the facts surrounding his wife’s disappearance. The local sheriff resents Racer's interference into his case but Malcolm insists he cooperate with Racer. During Racer's Investigation, a Carol Blakely informs Racer that she received a strange call around the time Christine disappeared to pull a car from a snow covered ditch matching Mrs. Hollaway’s. Not only does Racer believe that he is being followed but his cottage is broken into, his rental car is vandalized he wakes up lying next to the frozen body of Christine Hollaway. This doesn’t sit well with the local police. After another body shows up, Racer realizes he needs someone he can trust so he solicits the help of his ex-partner Cindy Darling and Sidney Waldo from the crime lab in Fairfield. During Racer's investigation, he finds out that the family attorney has links with the Mazzotti crime family in Chicago. Racer believes that Christine Hollaway’s bank account was being used in a money laundering operation without her knowledge. This gives motive for her disappearance. But who actually was doing the killing. He wasn’t sure yet but every trail led to another dead body. With the help of Cindy Darling and Sidney Waldo, Racer starts to pull this case together. With a suspect in his sights, he assumes someone else’s identified to draw out the killer. Racer confronts Malcolm Hollaway with his evidence. Malcolm breaks down and tells Racer about the laundering operation but insists that he does not know who killed Christine. Racer meets with Cindy and Sidney, at his cottage, to set the trap. The final surprise is who killed Christine Hollaway
