Sometimes a game plan makes a difference in a life . . . for good or bad . . . the question is . . . how good is your plan? Basketball action takes center stage for Rob Mathews on a personal and team level with villains lurking at every turn. The Danielson brothers are still at it . . . but he also faces an arch-enemy at Hillsdale High! In Game Plan , newcomer Rob Mathews gets introduced to the highly successful Varsity basketball coach Hal Bridges . . . an institution at Hillsdale High School for over 30 years! But due to nine seniors on Varsity, Rob is relegated to the JV squad where he is named Captain and leads the team on a quest for the first league championship in many years. The Varsity is also in the hunt for the title against arch-rival Pine Bluff and the court sizzles with action at both levels. Rob also gets his first taste of the Valley Christian Knights . . . and comes away knowing that this rivalry may blossom into a huge one in the coming three years. Off the court, Rob struggles with the social aspect . . . trying to figure out how to ask out the girl he is crushing on . . . and trying to stay out of the way of junior cheerleader Dee Dee Baker, who seems to have made it her mission to embarrass Rob. Her on-and-off boyfriend, Jake “The Snake” Gardner, a junior Varsity hoopster has it out for Rob . . . and for Donnie Fields, the sophomore receiver/linebacker that played such a prominent role in the Pine Bluff “Pick” game during football season. In the aftermath of the “Pick” game, Donnie struggles and gets some help from Rob’s mother Emily, football Coach Dave Wilson, Rob, and friend Buck Buckman. Together they help Donnie come up with a game plan for his life . . . while at the same time, the girl next door, Allison Pierce does the same to help Rob win the heart of a certain young lady now . . . in hopes Rob’s attention will turn to her in the future. ABOUT THE SERIES . . . Game Plan is the second in a completed series of twelve books by Mac McGowan. Written with a light narrative hand, riveting sports action, and a sprinkling of humor, the stories flow along briskly. The series follows Rob chronologically through his high school career, in either a football, basketball, or baseball season. Rob will face bitter rivals in all three sports and questions of morals, ethics, integrity, and social interaction, on and off the field of play. Through Rob, his mother, the girl-next-door, his best friend, a special girlfriend, and his two mentor coaches, the reader will learn life lessons along with Rob. The series matures as Rob does, slowly working his way toward adulthood as the conflicts go from bullies to bad coaches to girl problems and work their way up to relationships, where to go to college, and how to look at long-term life goals. It takes a while, but we watch as Rob goes from caring only about what a girl looks like to a guy who understands what’s inside that matters. But make no mistake . . . action-packed sports are at the heart of all 12 books. The series offers an excellent opportunity for readers to enjoy thrilling wins and losses against bitter rivals on the field or court . . . and experience the joy and heartbreak of teenage romance, learn life lessons, make better choices, learn a little coaching philosophy, and become better people. More importantly, it offers an enjoyable, easy, fun, thrilling, and satisfying read.
