With “Gemstones and Earth’s History,” Walther Cloos tells the story of gemstones as they develop through earth’s history. His love for the earth and its gemstones, minerals, and metals shine through it while offering readers the opportunity to understand how gemstones and their parent minerals came into being. Throughout the book, the author explores the relationship of minerals, metals, and gemstones to the human organism. His insights into the ethereal aspects of nature immediately deepen one’s insight into the world’s origins. He aligns interesting events and the formation of substances from the earth’s oldest past with current observations. Walther Cloos was a husband, father, pharmacist, alchemist, Anthroposophist, lecturer, researcher, inventor, author, and pioneer in anthroposophical pharmacy practices during his meaningful life. He grew up in Darmstadt, Germany and studied pharmacy at the Stuttgart Technical University, attending lectures on mineralogy and geology and doing practical pharmacy training in the Spessart region and the southern Black Forest. After completing his formal education he went to work in a chemical factory in Darmstadt. Cloos later joined the Institute of Clinical Medicine’s laboratory staff in Stuttgart, the nucleus for what later would be the Weleda Company in Germany. There he started to develop the method for metal distillation to increase the medical actions of metals. These metallic mirror preparations, called ‘metallicum preparatum,’ have come to play an important role in the medicinal use of metals.His task was to take earth’s substance and transform it, developing “evolving nature” further for healing purposes. He studied the ideal conditions and best habitats for different medicinal plants and their biodynamic cultivation. The main focus of his work at Weleda would be the manufacture of medicines made from minerals and metals. Cloos worked out some 200 procedures for these medicines.
