It is sufficient to reinforce nominal 2-by lumber (1.5in wide finished stud) when the stud has been drilled or notched, such as to run water pipe or a DWV drain pipe. In addition to reinforcing the stud, it acts as a stud guard to shield the contents of the stud from accidental penetration. Piping must be less than or equal to 2-3/8" in diameter.
