German Flatts was established on March 7, 1788, and is comprised of two unique villages. The village of Mohawk was incorporated in 1844, and Ilion soon followed in 1852. With their proximity to the Erie Canal, these villages saw their share of business and industry and flourished as communities. Mohawk was home to a number of famous people, including a treasurer of the United States, a General Motors industrialist, one of the fated space shuttle Challenger crew members, and the two Keno brothers who made antiques a popular obsession on the television program Antiques Roadshow. Ilion is the birthplace of the Remington Arms Company, one of Herkimer County s oldest industries that still exists today and is known around the world. German Flatts provides an interesting snapshot of the daily life and important events in this community s fascinating history." Title: "German Flatts," From a Town to a book Author: Nichole Grant Publisher: WKTV Date: 07/27/2010 GERMAN FLATTS, NY (WKTV) - The Frank J. Basloe Library hosted a book signing for "German Flatts." "German Flatts" was published by Arcadia and the book is part of the Images of America Series. Herkimer County Historical Society Director, Susan Perkins and Administrative Assistant, Caryl Hopson, wrote the book. The duo had to reach out to the community, the Herkimer Library, and even Remington Arms to complete all of the research needed to complete the book. The Book gives the history of the German Flatts and is full of Historic photos. "We have a lot of photos, old time photos showing what Main Street and what both of the communities used to look like," Perkins said. "For Herkimer of course we have the Herkimer Church, we have a picture of a wind storm that blew a tree down." "German Flatts" covers many areas throughout the Mohawk Valley such as Mohawk, Ilion, Fort Herkimer, parts of Herkimer, and Spinnerville. Perkins says it took six months to complete the book but, it was a fun process. She is starting another book part of the Images of America Series on Little Falls. "German Flatts" is now available at the Herkimer County Historical Society. They are open Monday-Friday 10a.m. to 4p.m. and Saturday 10a.m. to 3p.m. Title: "German Flatts," From a Town to a book Author: Nichole Grant Publisher: WKTV Date: 07/27/2010 GERMAN FLATTS, NY (WKTV) - The Frank J.
