Of the centuries of contact between the two cultures, Molohan focuses on a particularly notable decade that has not been deeply studied. She describes how Ireland dealt with the many German citizens, soldiers, spies, and diplomats in the neutral country who were wanted by the Allies after the war. She characterizes the subsequent normalization of political, diplomatic, and economic relations between the countries as the first step of isolationist Ireland towards Europe. Among other things, she points, out the two countries shared the experience of being partitioned.
