The following work is a translation of the “Lexicon Manuale Hebraicum et Chaldaicum in Veteris Testamenti Libros,” of Dr. Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Gesenius, late Professor at Halle. The Lords Witnesses have substantially deabbreviated this work using the abbreviation list provided by Tregelles which covered around half of them. And just browsing and browsing the lexicon until we identified most of the remaining abbreviations omitted from that list. The deabbreviations were carried out with php and regex using 5 passes for each abbreviation group. The first abbreviation group contained those abbreviations which would have been semi deabbreviated by another deabbreviation had that abbreviation done been done first. The second abbreviation group contained the balance of the abbreviations save for the daft single letter abbreviations such as c., w., m., f., etc. These were dealt with by only deabbreviating whole phrases in which they might occur such as ‘c. acc.’ or ‘c. gen.’ or ‘m. pl.’ or ‘f. sing.’, and only if they were not preceded by another Latin letter and only if they were in the English not in any other language. The suprising result with all the ancient and modern lexicons we have deabbreviated, is that the increase in file size in the deabbreviated version is only between 2% (Gesenius) and 15% (LSJ), which means they never needed to be abbreviated in order to save on printing cost. It is hoped that the deabbreviations will resurrect these books and make their treasures accessible to a wider audience and more instantly accessible to all readers.
