What is the best way for the average person to experience the world's greatest mountain range--the Himalayas? Fortunately, there is now a good answer. The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal is the most popular footpath in Asia. Its genius lies in its design. Trekkers wind their way around and along some of the world's greatest peaks, ultimately getting near 18,000 feet, without ever having to do any 'technical climbing'. This Circuit is widely considered one of the world's great treks, and mortals from all around the world are coming to Nepal for the unique chance to 'get high'. Bill Walker ('Skywalker') struggled his way through the Annapurna Circuit in 2012. He has written this entertaining tale of his journey in this land of Sherpas, cold, altitude, and rushing water. This is a delightful look at one of the world's greatest trekking routes. The books looks at the good, the bad, and the ugly of travel in a lesser developed country. A great read! Peggy Beaman Another highly enjoyable book by Bill Walker (Skywalker). As with all his books, he's always entertaining but also informative. In some parts - such as the section where he's attempting to make it to Thorung La Pass - it reads like an enjoyable suspense novel. I couldn't wait to see if he made it through the pass! Part of his appeal is he doesn't try to be anything but an average person attempting a larger than average feat. Patty Graham If you are an average person of the same ilk as myself--yet afflicted with a an especially curious nature--then you are hankering for an authentic way to see the world's greatest mountain range. Yet you don't fancy yourself as an Edmund Hilary, Maurice Herzog, or Arlene Blum. The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal allows you to 'thread the needle' around some of the world's greatest peaks, without ever having to do any technical climbing. It is widely considered one of the world's greatest treks, and trekkers from around the world are now coming to this desperately poor country to 'get high'. "In some basic respects, Sherpas just are not like your average mortal." "Nepal is the poorest country I have ever visited. "And the people are the most hospitable. That is probably no coincidence." "I was a fish out of water in this land of cold, altitude, and rushing water." "Life is not self-sustaining at really high elevations. In a sense, one is making a break for it." Bill Walker was born in Macon, Georgia and received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Accounting from the University of Georgia. He was a commodities broker at the Chicago Board of Trade and London International Financial Exchange for 14 years. He also taught English as a Second Language in Latin America for three years. Later he walked the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and El Camino de Santiago on three different occasions. Subsequent to those journeys, he wrote the following adventure narratives: Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail, Skywalker--Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail, and The Best Way--El Camino de Santiago. Walker, who is just shy of 7-feet tall, is currently working on a whimsical book on the subject of height.
