A coastal prairie filled with wildlife and adventure is the backdrop of a story about a young man leaving a privileged urban upbringing to find his place in the world. A journal found in modern day Refugio, Texas, reveals how the young man’s innocence is slowly taken away as he finds himself amid an historical event that would change not only his life but that of his comrades and of the very place they all cherished. Although the state of Texas sent scores of young men during the Civil War to batttlefields from New Mexico to Virginia, some stayed to guard the home front. This fictional journal portrays the mindset of these young patriots during the time Union forces were invading the lower coast of Texas and their lives immediately following the war.
