Part I explores the rich traditions, legends, and liturgy of the Mohawk (Iroquois) Longhouse religion. e Mohawk’s spiritual emphasis is one of anksgiving whereby the worshiper directs his or her prayers to the Creator or Great Spirit, thanking him not only for the rewards of material acquisitions, but also for the natural life sustaining provisions so generously provided and even for the fact of existence itself. Part II covers the life of Kateri Tekakwitha called the “Indian Saint.” Kateri was the daughter of an Algonquian woman captive and a Mohawk chief. Early on Kateri was acquainted with the teachings of Jesus Christ, as her mother was a devout Christian convert. In her village of Caughnawaga, a group of French Jesuits had established a rm foothold and discovered Kateri’s purity, her simplicity and her humility and they wasted no time in their e orts to mold and guide her towards spiritual perfection. In time, Kateri established a remarkable reputation for sanctity. She practiced austerities: fasted twice a week and vowed chastity. She passed through great self-imposed penances on her road to God Realization, for as she stated if Jesus su ered, I shall su er even more. Her severe practices led to a decline in her health and she died at the age of 24. Kateri was canonized in 2012. e mystical experiences of Kateri Tekakwitha will be examined in conjunction with three giants of modern Vedanta: Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, and Sarada Devi, the Vedanta Holy Mother, who have sought to demystify (explain) mysticism without undermining its spiritual foundation, and they have established the fact that even the most exotic or arcane experiences of a Kateri Tekakwitha and other world class saints can nd their counterpart in the Upanishads.
