Passion Flowers are native to Brazil and Argentina and are an absolute must-have for any romance, heirloom, or butterfly garden. All passion vine flowers are unique and unlike any other flowering plant. In the early 1600s, Catholic priests in Peru documented what they believed to be a religious symbolism in the unique flowers of this beautiful vine. The priests related the parts of the flower to features of the Crucifixion, and thus the name passiflora or passion flower was coined. Passiflora vitifolia: Vigorous vine with stunning, large, vibrant scarlet-red flowers. A tropical showstopper and hummingbird magnet. Perfect for arbors, trellises, or fences, offering continuous blooms. Flowers provide a nectar source for pollinators, but are not a preferred host plant. Care: For optimal growth, plant your passion flower in a partial-shade location with fertile, well-draining soil and a trellis or other support. Water deeply, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid spindly growth. Fertilize with a quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer in the spring, and prune as needed after flowering to control size. Indoor Growing: Most Passiflora Vines can be grown indoors, but may require substantial modifications to increase light, temperature, and humidity to produce flowers. To grow indoors, place the plant in a pot with good drainage and position it in bright, indirect light. A small trellis can provide necessary support. Misting the leaves can help maintain the humidity. Plants grown indoors rarely produce fruit. Climate: This vine is well-suited for USDA Zones 8 to 10. It is generally considered root hardy in Zone 8 when well established. Young plants should be protected from freezing temperatures in all Zones until very well established The product is a starter-sized plant with an approximate 4-inch-diameter root zone. The plant will be a minimum of 6 to 8 inches tall. It will not have buds or blooms on arrival. Starter-sized plants are intended for a gardener to plant and grow to their mature size.
