Growing up in Moultrie Georgia, Packer football was King. When the football season rolled around, I can remember Friday nights meant Packer football. If the Packers were playing at home, my dad and I would always go to the games. I can remember as a young boy, my dad, Bobbie H. Chafin, putting on a coat and tie and taking me to the games. Fact is, most men wore coats and ties to the games back then. To me, it seemed like the whole town shut down and everyone came out to see the Mighty Packers play. I always enjoyed hearing the roar of the crowd, the playing of the band, and listening to the cheerleaders yelling out their cheers. The best part was getting to see the Packers play football. As I grew older, I learned that my cousins Wayne and Lester Passmore played for the Packers in the 1960s. I remember them telling me about their playing days and what fun they had. My Aunt Mary (Chafin) Passmore also told me a few stories about Wayne and Lester. Fact is that the stories she told were all true. Lester’s senior year was 1963 and this was the year the Packers played Avondale for the state title. Oh, what a season it was! Since Lester’s death, I have often wanted to learn more about the 1963 team. I dedicate this story to my late Cousin, Lester Passmore #83, because he was someone I looked up to and was someone I loved very much. Here is my attempt at telling the story of the 1963 mighty Packers football team’s historical season and more. Hope you enjoy!
