Inspire young readers to grow their own fruits and veggies. Growing basil is fun and easy. It starts with a seed, but what else will readers need? This book takes them through the steps of growing a project they can be proud of. Readers learn to grow their favorite plants in this series. Each title starts with a table of contents, and vocabulary is in bold throughout the text. The end of each title includes a glossary. Short paragraphs are accompanied by photos and diagrams. A description of the plant is given along with a list of materials needed to help it grow, followed by step-by-step instructions for planting and care. The final pages have a "Take It Further" feature where readers learn how to use the plant they have grown, "you can add [basil] to soups or sauces. Put chopped leaves on pizza..." (Grow Your Own Basil). With help from a teacher or caregiver, these titles give students the opportunity to see the full life cycle of a plant. VERDICT A good introduction and basic instruction guide for young elementary readers on how to grow plants.--Hilary Tufo, Columbus Metro Library, OH "School Library Journal" Lisa Amstutz is the author of more than 150 children's books on topics ranging from applesauce to zebra mussels.
