Grumpy Gus Beats the Blues (Books for Kids Book 1) by Dale Lewis is a beautifully illustrated educational children's book about overcoming loneliness. Loneliness affects everyone, but in different ways. For Gus, being alone made him grumpy. One day Gus saw his friend, Louie Lou, and Louie Lou wanted to know why Gus felt so blue. Gus told Louie Lou that whenever they are separated, he misses all of the fun that they have together. Gus wanted to know how did Louie Lou deal with their separation and Louie Lou told Gus a secret. This secret changed Gus's life and he was never grumpy again. I enjoyed reading Grumpy Gus Beats the Blues because it was not only a beautifully written, colorful short story, but it gave a wonderful, simple solution that children can embrace in overcoming bouts of loneliness. In Grumpy Gus Beats the Blues, Dale Lewis did an excellent job in showing both sides of the picture because, for Gus, the separation made him grumpy, but Louie Lou remained happy because he did not let the separation affect him in the same way as it did Gus. Louie Lou did something about it.
