The way most Christians learn what they’re supposed to believe and how to live is inadequate. Sermons, Bible studies and miscellaneous conversations add bits and pieces to our knowledge, but they also leave lots of gaps, misunderstandings and unanswered questions that may not get addressed until much later. Too rarely do the current issues that trouble our hearts, threaten our relationships and challenge our faith get the kind of attention they need when they need it. It takes way too long for many of us to grow a consistently enriching connection with God – characterized by personal closeness, unwavering trust, dependable obedience, true delight, useful service and courageous love for others. This book/workbook is a concentrated effort to reverse those trends, especially for reasonably-new believers. It begins by highlighting the Bible’s emphasis on the one thing God wants more than any other: that we love him back as our primary response to his love for us. It then explores six practical ways to express that love to the One who so loves us. You can tackle it all on your own, but you’ll get much more out of it by reading and discussing its many questions with at least one other person. Heart For God presents a clear, biblical, personal and user-friendly approach to following Jesus by giving God what he wants most. After finishing his education at Talbot Seminary ('82), Bob Sears served as an associate teaching pastor and counselor for 20 years in two churches. He then sensed God leading him to engage more exclusively with people who weren't already involved in church, but were open to explore their spiritual beliefs. So he worked as a missionary in the 12-Step recovery community and eventually as a case manager/pastor at an in-treatment drug and alcohol rehab for men.Since his "retirement" in 2019 Bob has been teaching and developing this discipleship course to help God's people grow by focusing on what matters most. He lives in southern California with his wife, Caroline. You can reach him at bobasears@gmail.com.
