In 1952, on a fog-cooled San Francisco evening, a cocktail legend was perfected. After tasting Irish Coffee at Shannon Airport in Ireland, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Stanton Delaplane returned home determined to recreate it. Together with Jack Koeppler, owner of the Buena Vista Café, he spent the night refining the balance—coffee, whiskey, sugar, and cream—until the formula was just right.
But one element remained unresolved: the glass.
They found the answer in a pedestal-footed, curved-flare design—an elegant vessel that retained heat, showcased the drink’s dramatic layers, and allowed the cream to float cleanly atop the coffee. By the early 1960s, this glass had become inseparable from the Irish Coffee itself, a fixture in San Francisco taverns and the storied restaurants of Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach.
