A summer and fall flowering plant tolerating dry to moist soils in full sun or part shade. Hairy Lespedeza is a 2’ to 4’ tall native perennial nitrogen fixing legume. The common name refers to the white hair on the stems and leaves. This is a summer and fall flowering plant producing short spike-like racemes with whorls of flowers that are crowded together. The small pea-like cream colored flowers with a purple spot at the base are partially hidden by the long calyx lobes. Hairy Lespedeza will tolerate a wide range of soil moisture and sun exposure. It is easy to establish from seed and is important to native gardens, wildflower meadows, and conservation plantings due to its nitrogen fixing ability. The seed is an important food source for quail, turkey, and small rodents. Rabbits, deer, and other herbivores relish the foliage.
