Book Creation Chronicles Volume 5A presents botanical, butterflies, and shadows books. Creating books was first experienced as a student at Ringling College of Art and Design’s summer program class at Wildacres Retreat located deep in the Blue Ridge mountains. Over the last 25 years, various books have been produced. Early books featured botanicals, shadows, and butterflies. With the arrival of grandchildren, numerous books have been produced. These were designed to develop familiarity with colors, shapes, cars and trucks, animals, and food. As our grandchildren became older a book of Fables was developed. Our Christmas gift, in 2025, to our grandchildren was My Florida Adventure narrated by Pinkie Flamingo. The details as to how the books were created are as follows. Designing and constructing books has permitted the combination of many skills. Book Binding Each book is hand bound, with waxed thread, using a variety of stiches. The opening for each stitch was drilled through the paper following a pattern. The thread was covered with bees wax and then strung through a needle. A preset pattern was followed as the binding was completed. Graphics Most of the graphics, included in each book, are based on my original painted photographs and art. Format Various formats were used in creating books. Page size may have been modified for presentation in Volume 5. Media Many different media have been used including colored papers; linen content papers; handmade papers; photographic papers; paper backed fabrics including linen, silk, and cotton; fine art papers; canvas; and vellum. Supplies Wide range of gouache paints, pastels, watercolor paints, iridescent inks, acrylic paints, fabric paints, and brushes were utilized. Software Microsoft Word and Power Point as well Adobe’s Photoshop and PDF were used. Printers Epson’s SC-P900 Series and Epson ET-4050 were used. Printer Inks The ten inks used include matte black, photo black, gray, light gray, cyan, vivid magenta, light cyan, vivid light magenta, yellow, and violet. Grandchildren We have five (5) grandchildren – Noah, Mackenna, Faye, Henry, and Remi as well as two (2) bonus grandchildren – Ellie and Liev. The children’s book in Volume 5 are samples. Many of the books were individually produced for each grandchild.
