Anchor Bay is a haven for ghosts. The small towns that dot the shores of Lake St. Clair, the three Native American reservations and the remnants of several British and French military encampments in the area all lay claim to supernatural occurrences. The spirit of a state senator's son haunted his magnificent mansion just outside New Baltimore before the home was demolished. Mabel Hathaway's mysterious death remained unsolved for 140 years, and her ghost continues to stalk Oakwood Cemetery. A deceased sea captain seemingly moves his hidden treasure from beyond the grave when someone gets close to finding it. Local paranormal expert Debi Chestnut delights and frightens with these and other tales of Anchor Bay's historic haunts. Anchor Bay is a haven for ghosts. An object with a spirit attached to it can come into someone's life in many ways. Sometimes, they are purchased at an antiques store, flea market, garage sale or thrift store by an unsuspecting customer. Other times, they are inherited from a relative or come into their life in other ways. How they get there isn't really that important. What really matters is that once they are there, havoc and/or chaos often ensue. Something Is Cavorting, but It Isn't Nymphs Take the case of a print by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot called Dance of the Nymphs. It was purchased at an antique fair for $1. The fact that the print, which is worth well over $100, was so inexpensive should have raised eyebrows and a lot of questions, such as: Why was the framed print being sold for such a low price? But no one asked. Mary Benning was so excited to get such a good deal, she didn't think to ask about the pedigree of the print. Once she got it home, she hung it in the upstairs hallway next to her linen closet. A few days later, she walked upstairs to find all the items from the linen closet stacked neatly on the floor in the hallway. Not long after that experience, as she was heading to bed one night, she reached up for the long pull chain for the hallway light, but it wasn't in its usual place. Mary looked up and saw that the chain was neatly wrapped around the light. The ceilings in her old Victorian home are very high, so there's no conceivable way the chain could have become wrapped around the light unless someone or something did it intentionally. Mary's husband fetched a ladder to unwrap the chain. She removed the picture from the hallway and rehung it in the large upstairs bathroom. Mary's daughter, who is not prone to flights of fancy, came home from college and was taking a shower. She heard someone pounding rather forcefully on the bathroom door. Thinking it was one of her parents, she yelled that she'd be right out, but the pounding continued. When she peeked out of the shower, she saw that the door knob was turning back and forth, as if someone was trying to get out — or in. She got out of the shower and looked around the house, but no one was home, save for the cat lo
