Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838–1917) was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a noble family, becoming part of the royal court. Educated at the Royal School, she ascended to the throne in 1891 as the first and only woman to rule over the Kingdom of Hawaii. In the third year of her reign, Queen Liliʻuokalani was overthrown in her fight to maintain sovereignty of the monarchy. She was placed under house arrest following a coup d’état orchestrated by American annexationists, and Hawaii was then officially occupied as a territory of the United States.
