“Sattva” is an ancient Sanskrit term that means harmony, clarity, and balance. The three attributes (gunas) – Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, exist intrinsically in all of the things in nature (and in the mind). Sattvik, or pure, is the ideal state of mind, because a person with this quality is calm, alert, kind, and thoughtful. A person whose mind is predominantly Rajasik (too active/dynamic) always seeks diversions (incessant activity). The Tamasik mind is a dull, lethargic mind steeped in laziness and ignorance. Eating Sattvik food and following a Sattvik lifestyle was (and still is), according to Ayurveda, a major goal in the pursuit of optimal physical and mental health. This concept of healthy eating and healthy living that existed thousands of years ago in India is remarkably relevant today!
