According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a Highway is: “a public way”, and a Byway is: “a little traveled side road.” Our life and journey in Christ can be compared to these highways and byways. Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” We start out our lives, living and traveling the highways of life. Racing around from place to place along with all the other travelers on the wide-open public road. These highways lead us to large cities, filled with all sorts of things to entice our senses, but they eventually leave us feeling weary and unfulfilled. Then one day, as we are traveling down the road in life, we notice a little byway. It sits nestled alongside of the busy highway that we are accustomed to traveling on every day, yet somehow, we never really noticed it before. The byways’ beautiful scenery, with its winding roads, majestic oaks, and roadside flowers, beckons us to travel its way. As we start to travel down this road, we sense a peace and tranquility we have never known before. Instead of feeling weary and unfulfilled, we feel refreshed, and filled with hope. We come to sense that we have a purpose and a better end destination. Once we have found the byway, we program it into our GPS, so we can find it again. Then for some reason or another, we find ourselves back on the highway racing around from place to place, feeling weary and unfulfilled. And then we remember, we programmed the byway into our GPS…. all we have to do is look for the home button, where we can find our rest. Matthew 11:29-30 “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” The poems written in this book, are a reflection of the highways and byways in my life. I thank God every day, for that home button on my GPS.
