The front metal adjusters are metal prongs that pierce the fabric instead of the common buckle or friction sliders. This means there we be some damage to the material of the suspender strap each time they are used. In addition, due to the type of adjuster the front canvas straps are made long to fit most people. In some cases, they will be longer than needed. In 19th century, the excess length is commonly tied or tucked behind the straps.
