Chapter 1 This story is about a dog named Hobo. He is a short dog with brown fur and black paws that look like boots. There were thirteen puppies: seven brothers and six sisters. They were born near the railroad tracks. Hobo has grown to be a big dog, standing a good three feet high. He doesn't have an owner, and spends mostly of the days laying in the shade of the trees alongside the railroad tracks and chasing trains. Lately Hobo has been thinking that he could jump into a boxcar when a train comes by. The trains go from Norfolk, Virginia to Charleston South, Carolina. It is Saturday morning and Hobo hears the train whiste blowing. The train is coming! Hobo is really excited, jumping and rolling in the dirt, and sees the train coming around the bend. Hobo shakes off the dirt. The train is starting to pick up speed. He is going to do it! He sees a door on a boxcar open and starts running, and makes a great jump into the boxcar. In the boxcar, Hobo sees something in the dark shadows. It's a tall thin man with gray hair, not dressed very well, and he looks like a hobo. He has seen men like him before along the railroad tracks. The man says his name is Charlie. "Where are you going?" "Bark, bark!" Hobo replies, "I am heading to Charleston, South Carolina." Charlie says, "Great I have a friend who lives in Charleston. Would you like to go with me to meet my friend Jake? "Bark, bark! Yes," replies Hobo. The next morning the train is blowing its whiste and is starting to slow down. Hobo and Charlie look out the door of the boxcar to see where they are. Charlie can see that they are arriving in Charleston. "Okay, Hobo, it's time for us to jump from the boxcar before we arrive at the train yard. If we wait until we arrive at the train yard, the security guard will see us and arrest us. "Charlie and Hobo make a jump for it, but when they land, Charlie twists his ankle, and Hobo is okay. Charlie is talking to Hobo and wonders if Hobo could find Jake for him. Hobo thinks he can find Charlie's friend. Charlie puts a note under Hobo's collar and gives directions to Jake's cabin. "Hobo, see if you can find my friend named Jake. He lives in a small shack down by the river." Hobo takes off for the river, and sure enough, he sees a shack, a small log cabin with white smoke coming from the chimney. When Hobo arrives at the cabin, he starts barking and bangs on the door with his tail. Jake hears all this noise and goes to the door and sees Hobo. Jake says, "What do you want?" "Bark, Bark, Bark! Come with me!" Jake sees that Hobo wants him to follow and sees that he has a note under his collar from his friend Charlie. He follows Hobo down to the river to where Charlie is laying in the grass. "Hey, Jake, I see Hobo found you okay. He is a great dog." Hobo enjoys it when they praise him, Bark, bark, bark! Jake helps Charlie get back to the shack. Jakes goes for the doctor. The doctor arrives. His name is Jim. He sees that Charlie has hurt his ankle. The doctor mends Charlie's ankle with a splint. Jake asks,"Is anybody hungry?" "Bark, bark, bark!" Everybody laughs. "That dog of yours is really funny." "Oh, he's not my dog. He is just a friend that I met on the train who helpd me when I needed help. Hobo is a real hero." Hobo stays around for about one week while chasing squirrels and swimming in the river. Hobo is getting restless and is ready to move on. "Bark, bark, bark! I must be going. I'm thinking some good, old sunshine would be nice, so I think I wil be heading for Florida. The train old No. 95 will be coming through in the morning and I plan on catching her. I have enjoyed staying here. You all are my best friends. I am going to bed now, see you in the morning." When morning comes Charlie and Jake are looking around the house for Hobo, but he is nowhere in sight. They hear the train whistle and Hobo. "Bark, bark, bark! By, my friends!" They see Hobo make a safe jump into the boxcar of N9o. 95. Chapter 7 Hobo has just jumped on board another train. He isn't sure where this train is going but at least Hobo has a place to sleep tonight. It is really dark in the boxcar. There is some straw on the floor and Hobo makes himself a soft bed for the night. After a few hours of sleep, Hobo wakes up and it is day
