Where is Papa Hoot? Hootin needs to feed the baby owlets and Papa is missing! He is usually the one who hunts farther away from the safety of the barn. Since the babies are hungry, Hootin needs to take matters into her own...claws. She enlists the help of her Bandana Buddies to watch the owlets while she flies far from the barn to get food. During her adventure, she endures a scary thunderstorm and meets a new friend, Kit the fox, who shares her home and helps Hootin find the food she needs for her babies. This cute story in the series Bandana Acres , talks about the importance of being brave and enlisting the help of faithful friends. It teaches children that you are never alone. Dr. Virginia Smith President, Character First Education General Recommendation As a former teacher who is interested in helping children develop the capacity to make good life choices, I recommend the Bandana Acres series by Kathy J. Perry as a helpful resource to parents. The books are delightfully illustrated and promote good character through fun and friendly animal characters who learn important life lessons. Read the books together and open a dialogue about making choices by going over the questions in the "Things to Think About" section. The time invested in discussing character and using your core values to make good decisions is time well spent.Dr. Virginia Smith President, Character First Education The Wishing Shelf Book Awards 19th March 2023 Star Rating: 5 'A vibrant ́animal character ́ story with an exciting dilemma young children will enjoy.'The Wishing Shelf This is another sweet animal story from the pen of Kathy J Perry. Written for young childrenlooking for simple chapter books, it ́s the story of a mother owl who must go out hunting for food to feed her family. The problem is that daddy owl has vanished and there ́s nobody to protect her young when she ́s hunting. Thankfully, the other animals on the farm step in to help. There ́s not a lot wrong with this novel. The artwork is bright and colourful, the writing style is simple and accessible to the readership, and there ́s an interesting dilemma for the animal characters to sort out; a dilemma I think most children will find interesting. I also liked how the owl ́s inner thoughts are highlighted (this will be a big help to reluctant readers) and there ́s even a glossary to assist children with the bigger words. Oh, and I mustn ́t forget the map at the beginning which will help readers to get to know the farmyard and the surroundings. All in all, excellent. So, if you know any children who love animals - and, let ́s face it, most children do - get them a copy of this book. With it ́s ́helping out ́ theme, it ́ll be a big hit with parents too! Similar to Winnie-the-Pooh, it's a fun book for emerging readers transitioning from picture to chapter books.  East to read font - Words in blue for Hootin's inside thoughts (reluctant readers, start here) - Map - Glossary - "What If" Discussion section for application to the story and real life. - Theme: Flexibility - Cute illustrations kids will love "How long will you be gone?" A semi-retired elementary school teacher, Bandana Acres author Kathy J Perry now enjoys writing and illustrating early chapter books about animals who learn valuable lessons about friendships. Her goal is to help kids enjoy learning to read as well as apply what they've learned to their own lives. Her fun, animal adventures will appeal to first and second-graders and to pre-schoolers as a read-aloud story. Soft, watercolor illustrations have been a source of joy for Kathy to draw and paint.
