The author has photographed horses throughout the American West for almost forty years. This book is a collection of his best equine images. The majority of the photographs are of wild horses, with a few images of spirited domestic horses included as well. Each photograph is full page and includes informative captions describing various aspects of the lives of horses. The Preface briefly covers the origins and evolution of the horse, which appeared first on the North American continent 55 million years ago. Mention is made in the book about BLM management of wild horses and the ongoing controversy over how many horses should be allowed to roam free across ten western states.
