As a parent, how do you assess if your child's school is following appropriate procedures to protect both students and staff in the event of an emergency situation. Does the school have a strong safety plan which includes input from a cross-section of the school community; an understanding of appropriate response actions (lockdown, secure lockout, shelter, evacuation); a chain-of-command; experience from testing the plan; consultation with emergency responders; communication and notification procedures; and a plan for parent-student reunification if the unthinkable happens. These are some of the issues examined in this book which provides practical common-sense guidance on how parents can become better informed by creating a partnership with their school district.
