It gives a brief history of the game before explaining everything in a step by step fashion staring with the goal of the game and moving to the board and the pieces their symbols and values. It even explains what those chess clocks are all about. There is a nice explanation of castling which is a move I've always avoided because I keep forgetting the rules. The book also gets into chess notation which is another thing which has always mystified me. I found this section the most interesting because it is like learning a language. After the step by step explanation of how the game works there is a section where the rules are reviewed which is helpful. The book then describes the tactics of the game and breaks it down into 3 levels before explaining tactics for beginners in depth and moving on to strategies which is also 3 stages. It also recommends the best tactics for beginners and then at the end of the book reviews the tips and tricks so you don't forget. I thought this was an excellent book, concise, easy to understand and filled with useful information. Highly recommended. - James Campion Conway ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good overview and starting point. Chess is a complicated game with an amazing amount of information available related to it. It's hard to boil down to the basics that someone would need to know who's new to the game or only a casual player. This book does a good job of packing a lot of information into a small space. It's written well, has plenty of diagrams, and provides a great introduction to the game including game play, history, and some basic tactics. If you're new to the game and you digest this book, it will undoubtedly increase your understanding and appreciation of chess. Well done! - Watson H. Rhodes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Excellent book for learning the game. I played chess as a kid. Nothing competitive, just recreational but I never really made a study of it. As I'm a lot older now I was looking for something to work out my brain and I read that chess was good for helping with focus. This book would be real good for anyone looking to learn the game for the first time, or someone who has a beginner level understanding and wants to learn more about the subtleties of the game. It goes into history, terminology, and things such as the value of pieces. It does then go into tactics and strategy, making allusions to the similarities in war
